In an almost inhuman effort Adam Raga took the win in day 1 of the US World Round in Goldendale Washington. The win should be confirmed by the official results shortly.
At the end of the first lap, Raga was on 19 points. The expectation was for another Lampkin win, after his first lap of just 12 points. Several riders were within striking distance, but Raga was back in 5th place with 19. Raga had suffered a 5 on the very difficult first part of section 5, after slipping off the face of a rock while executing a pivot turn. It looked like it would be an expensive mistake.
The top riders on the first lap were Lampkin on 12, Cabestany on 13, and Fujinami on 14. Freixa and Raga were both on 19.
Lap two was a rush for all of the riders. Many of them did not inspect any of the sections, instead having to send their minders ahead to shout back a report on any changes in the section, then get straight into it. Lampkin did his usual second lap blitz, taking only 8 points, comfortably beating the scores of all the other riders..... EXCEPT ONE!
Adam Raga, riding the 2002 Gas Gas prototype, rode an absolutely unreal second lap, taking only 1 point! Both he and Dougie finished on 20 points, with Raga getting most cleans.
The Gas Gas camp have been in an exstatic mood since the scores were posted. This marks Raga's first World Championship win.
