I just bought a 2000 GG TXT280. It was recommended to me that I run Dextron III ATF in the gearbox instead of 5W-30 motor oil. I was told that this is being used by Gas Gas in some new shipments from the factory. What are your thoughts? Benefits/Drawbacks? Thanks..
Roger Roger, I'm not aware of ATF in the new Gas-Gas shipments. I've run ATF (straight and mixed) in many bikes, especially the 125 MX race bikes with good results. ATF Dextron is about 7 weight, is made for a wet clutch environment, has fairly good shear strength and has anti-foaming additives so it will work in a Trials bike gearbox well. It can, however, under some circumstances, cause some abrupt clutch engagement problems. I like the 5W-30 oil under most circumstances and oil designed specifically for motorcycle gearboxes (provided it is light enough) works well too. I think that you should try various oils and use the one that suits you best. The lighter weight oils seem to provide the smoothest clutch action. The main thing is to change it often. It may not look bad but the additives tend to break down over time, with heat and pressure. The nice thing about the 5W-30 oil (like Valvoline, Quaker etc.) is that it's rarely expensive so you can change it often without busting the budget. Jon |
