Could you please tell me how I could obtain a listing and description of routine "recommended maintenance requirements/procedures" for my 1997 "270" Gas Gas Trials bike?? Also, are there any mechanical, performance or specification differences between the 1996 and 1997 270's??
Thanks very much. Jim, The 96' and 97' are very similar. I think the 97' came with the improved airbox/filter setup, AJP shorty levers and as I remember, the Kukosan ignition (and some 96's possibly, mine has the Ducati type) plus a host of other small improvements. I have a 96' big-bore 370 Gas-Gas and my oldest son has a 97' 321 so I'm basing my comparisons (other than displacement) on our bikes. We're working on a factory recommended maintenance schedule to put up on the webpage but in the meantime I'll give you a very general idea of what I do to my bike, which is probably more stringent than most riders do with their bikes. It may be "overkill" but I feel that it's a lot harder to hurt a bike by too much attention than too little. The schedule will, of course, depend on how and how much you use your bike and under what conditions, so you may need to do more or less than what I do. View your Gas-Gas Video owner's Manual as this will explain a lot of what needs to be done and how to do it. After every Trial: Clean air filter and airbox Check ALL fasteners (doing this will enable you to look all over the bike and see if any damage occurred) Drain carb if it was a wet Trial Clean, lube chain Lube all pivot points (I use LPS 3) like levers, rear brake pivot bushing, throttle drum, pegs, folding foot controls, etc. Check coolant level and generally look over all connections under tank. I also like to change crankcase oil too if it was a very wet Trial Monthly: Check rimlocks, spokes, rim alignment Remove and waterproof grease rear brake pivot bushing If rough, wet, dusty conditions, lube rear suspension "dogbones" (they are fairly easy to get at and they take a lot of abuse) Every three months: Change crankcase oil (5W-30 works best) Check sparkplug/gap Every 6 months: Lube complete suspension and triple clamp bearings Check, lube all wheel bearings Yearly: Change clutch/brake fluids Drain/flush gastank, check fuel filter, drain and clean fuel bowl Flush, change fork oil.
