I have a JTR160 and a JTR250, i am having problems with the 250, the bike is stuck in gear and i cannot get it into neutral, there is also excessive play in the gear selector, can you help, also can i get to the gear mechanism without stripping the engine. Can you advise where I can get information that will help me or a workshop manual. Thanks in advance.

Chris

Chris,

Without looking at the engine myself, I would guess that you hit the gearshift on a rock or other hard object and sheared the rivet in the selector mechanism. This is a built-in safety feature designed to save expensive transmission parts in the event of a hard object bashing the shift lever, a common occurrence in Trials. If you feel confident that you can fix it, the gear selection arm is on the right hand side behind the clutch basket and can be accessed by removing the righthand sidecover. The selector arm can be re-riveted or a new one obtained. If you are not mechanically inclined, I'd have your Gas-Gas dealer look at it. This is my first guess and there is always the possibility that there is internal damage to the transmission which would mean a full teardown, inspection, measurement and assembly.

The JTR's came with a video owner's manual that addressed the gear selection rivet. Your Gas-Gas dealer can probably get you one. Good luck.
